Each year on the last Saturday in August the Mitchell Camel and Pig Races are hosted by the Mitchell Show Society, coinciding with the weekend before the Birdsville Races. The camel races feature a Calcutta race program with prize money for first, second and third place along with the Camel Cup final. Camels are auctioned before each race with the winning bidder or syndicate nominating the jockey. There are also novelty races, pig races, sweeps and market stalls.
